Research Assistant Support Subsidies
For many faculty members, time pursuing commercialization support is in direct competition with time spent grantwriting for student support (and many other activities). The issue of grantwriting is an important one, however, because due to conflict of interest concerns, even successful fundraising for commercialization (whether seeking funds internal to MIT such as the Deshpande Center or external to MIT such as an NSF SBIR grant) is unlikely to fund graduate students. Hence, it would be useful if there were ways to apply for RA support from internal MIT funds during periods of significant commercialization activity. This could either be during years while commercialization applications were being prepared or as offsets where receiving commercialization funds could be somehow matched by the institute with graduate RA support.
